Personal safety
a few simple precautions can help reduce the risks when you are out and about:
If you are out cruising:
- go with a friend
- avoid the darkest places, keep in sight (or at least shouting distance) of other men
- carry an attack alarm
- leave money, wallet and valuables behind
- trust your instincts, practise friendly but firm ways of turning people down. Don't do anything you're not comfortable with
- know your exits - it helps to have seen a place in daylight before going there in the dark
When leaving gay pubs and clubs:
- try to leave in a group
- you may be more vulnerable in dark alleys
- if you think you are being followed brightly lit public places (like a 24 hour petrol station) offer the safest environment
- if you are going home with someone you don't know you may want to make sure that someone (perhaps the barman) has noticed who you are leaving with
Going home with someone (or inviting a stranger into your home) creates particular risks. It may be safer to meet someone in a public place first. If you do decide to go home with someone:
- You may want to arrange to ring a friend at some point (or get them to ring you)
- leave your valuables out of sight - be aware of the risks of leaving your wallet in your trousers - you may need the bathroom when you are without them!
- Even if it's your ultimate fantasy, bondage with a stranger can leave you in a particularly vulnerable position.
